BANT

BANT is a traditional sales qualification framework used to determine if a prospect is a good fit for your solution based on four criteria: Budget (do they have the funds?), Authority (can they sign the contract?), Need (do they have a problem we solve?), and Timing (when do they plan to buy?).

How BANT Works in Modern B2B Sales

Developed by IBM in the 1950s, BANT remains a foundational checklist for qualifying opportunities. While some argue it is outdated for complex modern sales (where authority is distributed and budget is flexible), it is still the quickest way to disqualify prospects who are clearly not ready to buy.

Modern application of BANT is less of an interrogation ("Do you have budget?") and more of a discovery process ("How are you funding this initiative?"). It ensures sales reps don't waste time on "tourists" who have no intention or ability to purchase.

Why Qualification Matters

A pipeline full of unqualified leads is dangerous. It gives a false sense of security and ruins forecasting accuracy. BANT provides a standardized way to say "No" to bad deals early, freeing up time to focus on deals that can actually close.

SalesMind AI and Qualification

SalesMind AI's AI Sales Agent handles the initial "N" and "T" (Need and Timing) qualification during the prospecting phase on LinkedIn. By the time a rep speaks to the prospect, the basic interest and timeline are often already established.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BANT dead?

Not dead, but evolved. In SaaS, "Budget" often comes last (if the ROI is proven, budget is found). Frameworks like MEDDIC are often better for Enterprise sales, but BANT is great for SMB/Mid-market velocity sales.

Who should use BANT?

SDRs (Sales Development Reps) typically use a "lite" version of BANT to qualify leads before passing them to AEs (Account Executives).

What if a prospect has Need but no Budget?

They are a "Champion" but not a buyer. You need to help them build a business case to unlock the budget. This is where "selling value" replaces "checking boxes".
